Actually, a new book couldn’t wait. In 2019, the celebration of 75 years of freedom, we launched the war column De Peel under fire, in which we described many facets of the Second World War in the municipalities of Deurne, Asten and Someren.

Owners of “De Peel under fire” hereby complete their series.

Every week, DAS Mediacentrum we published an extensive article in its titles Weekblad voor Deurne, ‘t Contact and Peelbelang. The column was so well received that we opted for a book form: it sold out in no time.

80 years of freedom
That success cried out for a sequel. An opportunity that presented itself last year at the celebration of 80 years of freedom. We chose a fitting, connecting research question: how did the reconstruction of the Peel?

With thanks to a working group consisting of Richard Schoutissen (Deurne), Hans van Toer (Zeilberg), Piet Snijders, Jos van der Weerden and Gerard Geboers (Asten), Els Haasen (Heusden), Cees Verhagen (Someren) and Jan Driessen (Lierop), we also managed to aptly portray that period in words and pictures.

Now comes the icing on the cake: this series will also be published in book form. Collectively, the works account for a comprehensive description of World War II in the Peel. From the German invasion, or actually earlier, to the memories that live on today and the remnants still visible.
